The Renault 5 Turbo 2 was presented at the 1982 Paris Motor Show as the replacement
model for the R5 TURBO whose production ceased at the same time.
This model had some clear objectives, including the sales recovery for the R5 TURBO
model that have began to decline, reduce production costs and target a less exclusive
clientele. To achieve this goal, Renault's engineers sought to use existing elements
from other models, that have proved successful with Renault customers, without changing
too deeply the philosophy of the model.
It was for these reasons that the R5 TURBO 2 kept almost unchanged its mechanics,
with only a few small details revised, focusing the major changes in the interiors
that were recovered almost entirely from the R5 Alpine Turbo.
This led to the lost of its original steering wheel and dashboard that become
the same as those from the R5 Alpine Turbo, with one slight difference in
the speedometer, here showing a top speed of 220 km/h.
For the body were also used several components from the R5 Alpine Turbo, such as
panels, windshield and door trims. Even the bumpers were no longer in polyester,
that was replaced by ABS, and a semi-recessed fog taillight was introduced
in the rear bumper.
The R5 TURBO 2 was manufactured from 1983 to 1986 with its production officially
ceased on July 1, 1986.
In 1983 1,345 units are manufactured in colors: White (355), White
Nacre (158), Brown (769), Bordeaux (721), Navy (403), Black (622) and Red (705).
In 1984, 1,497 units were manufactured in colors: White (355), Bordeaux (721),
Navy blue (491), Cobalt Blue (401), Blue Schiste (402), Alpine Blue (485 ),
Black (694), Silver gray (620), Steel gray (618), Champagne (161) and Red (705).
From vehicle 3089 on, only one version of interior was made, in beige color.
In the last quarter of 1984 are also produced 200 units with specific characteristics
that will allow the entry of the R5 Maxi Turbo into the Group B competition. These
limited series units (type 8221), produce the same bhp as its predecessor but are equiped
with a 1432 cm3 turbocharged engine with a specific admission pressure.
In 1985, 182 units are produced and 143 in 1986 in the colors: White gardenia (303),
White nacre (015), Navy (048), Black (655), Silver gray (069), Cognac (014) and Red (075).
